Why I ditched YouTube Premium and other streaming services (2026)

I recently made a decision that I once vowed I'd never make: I paid for YouTube Premium Lite. This was primarily due to my heavy reliance on YouTube for content, and my frustration with the constant interruptions from ads during both my daytime viewing and my sleep playlists. While this subscription was a begrudging one, it got me thinking about the value of premium streaming plans offered by services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+. Here's why I think these plans might not be worth the cash, and what streaming services could do to improve their offerings.

The Premium Plan Checklist

Premium plans typically offer a few key upgrades, but are they worth the extra cost?

  • Fidelity: Premium plans often include higher resolution (4K) and audio formats (Dolby Atmos, spatial audio) compared to free plans. However, any decent TV will upscale 1080p to 4K seamlessly, making the difference hard to notice.
  • HDR: High Dynamic Range (HDR) is a significant upgrade, enhancing shadow detail, highlights, and color range. While some may find Dolby Vision too dark, it's often adjustable in settings or can be avoided in favor of HDR10+. I personally don't find HDR essential, and many grew up without it.
  • Offline Caching: Premium plans offer offline viewing, which is useful for travel or unreliable internet. This feature might be expanded with a premium subscription, but it's not a deal-breaker for most.
  • Simultaneous Streams: Premium plans often allow for more simultaneous streams, which can be beneficial for larger households. However, the need for multiple streams at the same time is rare for most users.

Why Premium Plans Fall Short

  • Price: Premium plans can cost over $20 per month, and the price is rising. For the price of one premium plan, you could get two separate services, which often provides more content and variety.
  • Content Availability: Streaming services have already decided to make all content available regardless of plan, and some even include mobile games. Adding full-fledged PC and console games for premium customers would likely increase prices significantly, which might not be justified by the additional value.

What Could Improve Premium Offerings?

  • Price Control: Keeping prices in check is crucial. Services should focus on offering value within a reasonable price range, especially as customers are already struggling to afford multiple subscriptions.
  • Content Strategy: Instead of investing heavily in exclusive content, services could prioritize a wider range of content, ensuring that customers have more options to choose from.

In conclusion, while premium streaming plans offer some upgrades, the cost and lack of essential features make them less appealing. Streaming services should focus on providing value, keeping prices competitive, and offering a diverse content library to attract and retain customers.
