Get ready for an exciting season as we uncover the rising stars set to shine in the Sydney NRL clubs!
The Future is Bright
While Leo Thompson's big-money move to Canterbury has grabbed headlines, another young talent, Finau Latu, is generating buzz at Belmore. St George Illawarra's coach, Shane Flanagan, expressed frustration last season when he learned that Finau had signed with the Bulldogs. Flanagan's anger was directed at Latu's management, as he felt the club had invested in his development and wanted to keep him.
But here's where it gets controversial... Newcastle was also interested in signing Latu, adding fuel to the fire.
The 19-year-old has brought an impressive energy to training, with players noting his tackling prowess. Despite stress fractures limiting his game time last year, Bulldogs' general manager, Phil Gould, declared that Latu will play first grade this year.
And this is the part most people miss... Back-rowers Logan Spinks and Jed Reardon, with a strong family connection to the Bulldogs, have also impressed.
We reached out to the eight rival Sydney clubs to uncover which young players are poised for a breakout season.
St George Illawarra Dragons
Coach Flanagan has praised wing recruits David Fale and Setu Tu, who are making a strong case to start for the Dragons. Fale, who made his debut for Penrith last season, and Tu, with his impressive try-scoring record, are bringing a new dynamic to the team.
Manly Sea Eagles
Young prop Simi Laiafi, with his impressive 118kg frame and Australian Schoolboys representation, is on the cusp of his debut. His transition has been eased by the strong Tongan presence in the Sea Eagles' pack.
Sydney Roosters
Toby Rodwell, the 19-year-old playmaker, has impressed Roosters fans with his calmness under pressure. Despite tough competition, Rodwell is in the running for a taste of the big time this year. His unflappable nature, both on and off the field, has caught the attention of many at the club.
Penrith Panthers
Billy Phillips, who made his NRL debut last season, is set to become a regular this year. The Lithgow forward is often compared to club co-captain Isaah Yeo, not just for his roots and stature but also for his work ethic. Kalani Going, recruited from the Warriors' reserve grade team, has also stood out, bringing new energy to the Panthers.
South Sydney Rabbitohs
Salesi Ataata, who made his mark in the NSW Cup, is proving to be a force during opposed sessions this summer. With his strong ball-carrying skills, Ataata is set to benefit from a full pre-season with the first-grade squad. Dayne Jennings is another player to watch, but his time may come a little later.
Cronulla Sharks
Liam Ison, who ruptured his ACL last year, is back and ready to apply pressure on Will Kennedy for the No.1 jersey. This season, Ison aims to remind the Sharks why they secured him with a long-term deal.
Parramatta Eels
Jezaiah Funa-Iuta, a NSW under-19s Origin back-rower, has been flawless this summer. Comfortable on both sides and in the middle, Funa-Iuta is a versatile talent. Teancum Brown, who made his debut last season, is another Eel ready to make his mark.
Wests Tigers
The Tigers are celebrating the signature of back-rower Ethan Roberts, an Indigenous All Stars player with excellent movement and ball skills. His addition, along with Samuela Fainu and Kai Pearce-Paul, strengthens the club's back-row stocks.
As we count down the days to the new season, these young talents are poised to make their mark. Who will shine the brightest? Let's find out together!
