The San Diego Padres, under the leadership of president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller, have had an unusually quiet offseason—at least on the surface. Sure, Michael King was re-signed, and Sung-Mun Song was added via free agency, but those were the splashier headlines. Beyond that, the Padres bolstered their major league roster with pitchers like Kyle Hart, Ty Adcock, and Daison Acosta, though most of their other moves have been minor league contracts. But here’s where it gets interesting: is this all there is, or does Preller have something bigger brewing?
The offseason began with glaring gaps in the Padres’ lineup. The team desperately needed starting rotation depth and a reliable first baseman or designated hitter. While these concerns still linger among fans, there was a glimmer of clarity at Padres FanFest—sort of. Manager Craig Stammen hinted that Gavin Sheets is the de facto first baseman as Spring Training approaches. As for the designated hitter role? It seems the Padres might use it more as a rest day for stars like Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts, rather than committing to a full-time DH. And this is the part most people miss: without a dedicated DH, the team’s offensive strategy could look very different this season.
With Preller at the helm, it’s never wise to rule out a late signing or trade. After all, he signed Nick Pivetta after Spring Training began last year, proving the roster isn’t set in stone. But with pitchers and catchers reporting on February 12, time is ticking for any major additions before camp opens. The longer we wait, the more it feels like the “blockbuster trade” teased during the MLB Winter Meetings might just be a pipe dream. But here’s the controversial question: Is Preller playing it too safe, or is he strategically waiting for the perfect moment to strike?
Gaslamp Ball wants to hear from you, the Friar Faithful. Do you think Preller and the Padres will pull off a significant trade or signing before Spring Training begins? Or is this the year they play it cool and trust their current roster? The results of the Padres Reacts Survey will be unveiled later this week, but in the meantime, we’re curious: What’s your take? Let us know in the comments—agree or disagree, we want to hear your thoughts!
