David Montgomery's Arrival: Impact on Houston Texans' Running Backs (2026)

Houston's Running Back Shuffle: A Controversial Move?

The Texans' recent acquisition of David Montgomery has sparked a debate among fans and analysts alike. With the addition of Montgomery, a seasoned veteran, the team's running back situation has taken an intriguing turn.

The Texans have shown a preference for experienced running backs, and Montgomery's arrival, just shy of his 30th birthday, seems to signal the end of the road for Joe Mixon and Nick Chubb in Houston.

In 2024, the Texans acquired Mixon via trade, and last year, they signed Chubb as a free agent. However, with Montgomery's official trade to Houston next week, it's clear that neither Mixon nor Chubb will be returning in 2026.

Chubb, who rushed for 506 yards in 15 games (starting 9) last season, and Mixon, who spent the entire year on the non-football injury list, are now free agents. Their injuries and age have likely played a significant role in the Texans' decision to move on.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Texans' depth chart at running back now features Montgomery and Woody Marks, leaving no room for Mixon or Chubb. The third-string running back typically plays special teams, a role that older running backs rarely take on.

Chubb is 30, and Mixon will turn 30 in July. Their chances of returning to Houston are slim, unless an injury opens a door and neither signs with another team.

Montgomery will earn $6 million this year and is due for a $9 million payday in 2027. He provides an experienced option for at least one, if not two seasons, while Marks, who had an impressive 703 rushing yards as a rookie, continues to grow.

The decision to trade for Montgomery so soon after the Scouting Combine suggests the Texans' confidence in their ability to secure a reliable running back at a reasonable cost. They gave up valuable assets, including a fourth-round pick, for a player with seven years of experience, who will turn 29 in June.

This strategy of having one older and one younger running back, coupled with a significant annual overhaul of the offensive line, raises questions. Is this a risky move, or a well-calculated plan?

What do you think, sports fans? Is this a bold strategy or a potential disaster? Weigh in and let us know your thoughts in the comments!
