Bondi Breeze: Panov Scott’s Innovative Federation-Era Home Renovation (2026)

Prepare to be blown away by the incredible transformation of Bondi Breeze, a project by the talented duo, Panov Scott! This architectural masterpiece started as a personal journey for Anita Panov and Andrew Scott, who built their own home, infusing it with their unique vision and a passion for intricate detailing. The standout feature? An oversized window that seamlessly connects the interior with the lush garden, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. Fast forward to today, and you'll find this once-quiet suburban street in Bondi transformed into a captivating architectural wonder.

Bondi Breeze is an exceptional renovation of a Federation-era semi-detached house. While the original structure was charming, it lacked the functionality needed for a family of four. The clients' request was simple: create a home that accommodates everyone comfortably, shields them from the elements, and preserves their beloved backyard garden.

Panov Scott's solution is a masterpiece of simplicity and ingenuity. By maintaining the original footprint, they crafted a compact plan that brings nature indoors. The ground floor is redesigned to incorporate a perimeter garden, accessible from almost every room. The front room, with its archway guarded by twin plaster corbels, serves as a reminder of the home's past, while the rear is transformed into a modern sanctuary with a laundry, washroom, kitchen, dining, and living area. Upstairs, two bedrooms for the kids, a bathroom, and a parents' retreat complete the layout.

A unique concrete blockwork screen, supported by a hidden steel framework, defines the original house's envelope. The rooms are strategically positioned to capture views of the perimeter garden, creating a peaceful oasis along the previously overlooked side elevation. The innovative use of turned blocks not only allows sunlight to filter in but also supports the growth of a vibrant garden that will eventually envelop the entire two-storey volume.

Andrew and Anita's clients were undoubtedly surprised by the garden's central role in the design, but they quickly embraced the enhanced amenities their new home offers. The custom steel doors in the kitchen seamlessly blend the indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a delightful cooking experience amidst nature. And then there's the showstopper - the steel guillotine-like window between the living room and garden. Counterbalanced to lift behind the joinery of the parents' bedroom, this window transforms the living room into a theatrical space, framing the garden and offering a unique seating area for guests to soak up the northern sun.

But here's where it gets intriguing: the absence of a traditional back door to the garden. Instead, Panov Scott has created a bold threshold that celebrates the connection to the outdoors. This subtle subversion aligns with their philosophy of enhancing experiences through architecture. By disrupting the conventional expectation of simply moving through a space, they've elevated a mundane act into a thoughtful moment of daily life. The presence or absence of the rear window becomes a dynamic element, shaping the atmosphere and use of the living room throughout the day and with changing weather conditions.

So, what do you think? Is this architectural approach a refreshing take on everyday living, or does it challenge your notions of comfort and functionality? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
