Attention, Anchorage! A bold move is being proposed by the school district, and it's sparking a heated debate. Three elementary schools are facing potential closure, and the community is divided.
In a recent update, the Anchorage School District has recommended shutting down Fire Lake Elementary, Lake Otis Elementary, and Campbell STEM Elementary. This decision is part of their "rightsizing" project, aiming to streamline operations and tackle a significant budget deficit of $90 million. But here's where it gets controversial: two of these schools, Fire Lake and Lake Otis, were already on the chopping block last October, yet the district is now proposing a different fate for them.
Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt's message to parents outlined the proposed changes, including the relocation of Tudor Montessori to Denali Montessori and the transition of Denali's sixth graders to middle school. Additionally, boundary adjustments are planned for O'Malley and Government Hill elementary schools to align immersion programs, and Abbott Loop Elementary is declared "excess" due to the relocation of Rilke Schule German Immersion School.
As for the three schools facing closure, Bryantt's message suggests offering Fire Lake's building to Eagle Academy Charter School, Lake Otis's building to Rilke Schule, and declaring Campbell STEM as "excess." But this is the part most people miss: the potential impact on students and the community. In a separate letter, Bryantt addressed Fire Lake families, explaining that if the school closes, most students would be relocated to Eagle River Elementary, with a few going to Chugiak Elementary and SLC classrooms moving to Alpenglow Elementary.
The Anchorage School Board will vote on these closures on February 24th, and a work session is scheduled for Tuesday at 3 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 6 p.m. This decision has the community buzzing, with strong opinions on both sides. Are these closures necessary to save the district's finances, or will they disrupt the education and community of these elementary schools? What do you think, Anchorage? Share your thoughts and let's discuss this controversial proposal!
